As you guys will probably now know, my life has changed drastically with the birth of my daughter, Lyric-Louise.
Life has changed drastically, as i am sure you can imagine. Nothing and no one can prepare you for motherhood, except living it! I have to say…it’s the best job you will ever have! My daughter is simply amazing and warms my heart everytime she smiles.
Unlike most mothers though, not only did i have to prepare for being a mother, I also had to prepare for life as an artist and a mother.
Touring, rehearsing, working unsocial hours….and waiting for you body to get back to normal! It’s a huge change.
Having said that, me being me, the driven, ambitious person that I am, I have been adamant, to ensure my career gets back on track, while ensuring my daughter gets all the emotion and time she needs. Which is why it is so important to have the love and support of the people you work with, I am blessed…truly.
Being in the music industry has taught me to listen to my gut and never take advantage of good people. I am proud to say that my pregnancy has shown me how amazing my musical family is. I was working up until I was 9 months pregnant and received nothing but love and support throughout, which made me want to keep working! It helped me to have a healthy pregnancy and I will always be grateful for the people I choose to surround myself with.
This brings me onto the next piece of exciting news!
So, as I mentioned, I was working up until the 9th month of pregnancy, which was when I recorded my next release, A cover of a UK soul gem, Des’ree’s ‘You Gotta Be.’ A cover that I am so proud of.
I have never recorded a cover song before and myself and DJ Spen, thought it time I did one. Selecting one to do was a tough decision! I thought, it has to be right for me as an artist, it has to be a Huge tune! Furthermore, I have to make sure I do the tune justice. For me, this is the main thing when doing a cover. This is the main thing I listen out for when I hear someone has done a cover.
We were going through loads of Old Skool Soul classics…but most of them were from American artists. As most of you know, I am unapologetically and proudly Black British, so I really wanted the cover song that we did to pay homage to the UK Soul genre and the amazingly talented artists that we have always had here.
Now, in terms of UK Soul divas, I have always found myself drawn to two whom are full of elegance, poise, beauty and unquestionable class.
Funny enough, I have also been mentioned in the same vain as these two amazingly talented women….Des’ree and Sade.
I knew the cover had to be from one of these women.
So, first decision made…next…which song? I needed a song that was absolutely huge! one that I have always related to and one that was loved by everyone all over the world.
It had to be ‘You Gotta Be’ by Des’ree…I mentioned the song to Spen and he LOVED the idea.
So here we are! we are soooo excited to announce the release of this amazing track, with some truly sublime remixes to be released in the new year.
